Brussels, 15 November 2017. The Brewers of Europe takes note of the UK Supreme Court ruling on minimum unit pricing and is keen to see a robust assessment of its impact on health harms in Scotland.
Pierre-Olivier Bergeron, Secretary General of The Brewers of Europe said:
“Whilst taking note of the judgment by the UK Supreme Court today, we will monitor the implementation and evaluation of the Scottish legislation and the extent to which the resulting market distortions would ultimately be justified by the introduction of minimum unit pricing, a measure introduced on the presumption that it would effectively reduce alcohol-related harm.
The UK Supreme Court decision will certainly not discourage the brewing sector from pursuing its efforts, with many other stakeholders across Europe, to promote responsible beer consumption and address harms through focused, multi-stakeholder approaches looking at all the drivers of the behaviour of the minority of consumers that misuse alcohol.”
