Cypriot Brewers step up activities under EU Alcohol and Health Forum

October 16, 2013

Today the Cyprus Brewers Association, under the umbrella of The Brewers of Europe, filed its latest commitment under the EU Alcohol and Health Forum. The brewers will support the Cypriot implementation of the annual Commission-supported European Night without Accidents Initiative. This Saturday 19 October in nightclubs across Europe, volunteers outside nightclubs will inform people about responsible drinking and encourage groups to choose a designated driver, someone who commits to staying sober and being responsible for driving home safely the other friends in their group. When the “designated drivers” leave the nightclub, the volunteers give them the opportunity to undergo a breath test to confirm they have honoured their commitment. The brewer volunteers will join their lead partners from the Cypriot youth NGO “Reaction, Youth for the Prevention” on the night and also promote the campaign’s message across the media..

This commitment brings to 258 the total number of commitments made under the EU Alcohol and Health Forum, of which 102 were submitted by The Brewers of Europe and individual beer companies, reaffirming the brewing sector’s position as the lead contributor to concrete Forum actions implementing the EU Strategy to support Member States in reducing alcohol-related harm. The Cypriot activity on drink driving comes on top of the 3-year partnership between The Brewers of Europe and the EU-wide NGO the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), a partnership that began on 1 October and will be presented to MEPs in the European Parliament on 4 November.
