Brussels, 19 September 2012: To welcome the EU Cypriot Presidency, The Brewers of Europe and the Cyprus Brewers Association were very proud to serve traditional Cypriot beers to policymakers and officials at ‘The Parliament Magazine’s Cyprus Presidency Reception’.
The biannual Presidency event is a landmark in the Brussels calendar. Hosted this time by MEPs Takis Hadjigeorgiou and Ioannis Kasoulides, the event also welcomed Andreas D.Mavroyiannis, the Cypriot Deputy Minister to the President for European Affairs.
In welcoming the EU Cypriot Presidency, Pierre-Olivier Bergeron, Secretary General of The Brewers of Europe said, “Beer is a local product, brewed and enjoyed in every single EU country. It is very pleasing to see policymakers and officials enjoying Cypriot beer, kindly donated by the Cyprus Brewers Association, which represent a real taste of Cyprus.”
Two Cypriot beers were served at the event – Keo and Leon – which are likely to be new to most consumers on the rich Belgian beer market:
- Leon is the product of the first brewery in Cyprus founded in 1937 and is an ‘All Malt’ beer, using only malt, hops and yeast in its production.
- Keo won the 1987 brewing industry world bottled lager competition Gold Medal. Its ingredients include malted barley, maize, and hops.
The Cypriot brewing sector supports the local economy with jobs and tax revenues in the same way that brewers in all other EU Member States do. According to the latest Ernst & Young report, this contribution can be quantified as follows:
